Carrier trade-in gives on-top discounts but no cash, while shops pay a lump sum instantly — plus the best timing to sell.
Carrier trade-in vs second-hand shop — which pays better in 2026?
Short answer: Want cash to use freely? Selling to a buyback shop wins. Want a new-phone discount finished in one place? Carrier trade-in is more convenient. There is no single best answer — check these 4 points first.
1. Second-hand prices fall in cycles — wrong timing costs thousands
The Thai market picture in 2026 is consistent across research:
- Year one loses 3–5% per month on average, steepest in the first 6 months
- In September (Apple launches) older models drop 10–20% immediately
- Prices are calmest April–June; August–September is the window to avoid if you can
If your upgrade cycle lines up, check prices before September — after launch the whole board reprices down.
2. How far apart are grade A and B?
Big centers grade the same way:
- Grade A: 100% working, no more than 3 light marks, no heavy screen/body damage
- Grade B: 100% working too, but medium marks or more than 3 spots
The A/B gap runs about 1,000–2,000 THB depending on model and capacity. Inspect the phone in good light, then grade honestly in a quote for the closest number.
Grades look at exterior marks — battery is scored separately3. Carrier trade-in: convenient and safe, but pays as discount
Studio 7, iStudio, AIS and True share a skeleton with very different terms:
- The appraised value becomes a new-phone discount, never cash (all of them)
- On-top promos / trade bonuses come and go (research found roughly 1,000–8,000 THB by campaign)
- Combinable with 0% installments at many stores
- Studio 7: clear per-model A/B price tables, beats iStudio in 85 of 90 compared models (Sept 2026 data) — but the official site requires trading the same day you buy (some campaigns allow a 5-day return — always check that round's terms)
- iStudio: priced below nearly everything (wins only 16e/17e) and appraises through outside company CompAsia (SPVi disclaims the transaction) — but takes up to 5 devices and locks prices 21 days
- True: Value Care guarantees 65% trade-back for iPhone 18 buyers on 1,499+ plans (12-month contract, usable through end of 2027)
Best for people already buying new who hate hassle — but if you want cash for something else, no trade-in program pays it.
4. Selling to a buyback shop: lump sum now, but pick the shop well
- Cash or instant transfer after agreeing — spend it on anything
- Direct buyback prices follow the mid-market, not tied to new-phone promos
- Doorstep pickup and postal service for upcountry sellers (pack well, send Kerry/Flash/J&T, wait for inspection and transfer)
- Watch out: mall kiosks have no standards and can lowball on the spot, while selling it yourself may fetch more but risks scammers and chat time
Pre-sale checklist: signed out of iCloud, box IMEI matches, charger complete, honest battery health.
5. Four things that drag the price down on any channel
- Battery below 85% — a four-figure deduction is normal. How to check takes 10 seconds.
- Missing box / incomplete accessories — a matching-IMEI box adds trust.
- Foreign sets — Thai-code (TH/A) devices resell easier with local service access.
- iCloud-locked / heavily repaired / third-party parts — downgraded or rejected outright. Erase properly first.
Long remaining warranty and big capacity hold value up, because shops resell them faster.
